Survival of the Fittest?

The zeal to survive in my opinion is more like survival of the fittest, you have to have the will, the want, the strive to reach and succeed. I believe that in many ways on a every day basis we show the zeal to strive, whether its putting on a seatbelt or even helping a old lady across a busy road. Each of those things shows you want to survive, whether it is the small things or the biggest things.

As for an example, in the Titanic when the end comes around and Rose and Jack were in the water that is a gesture of dignity. Jack made sure Rose was out of the water so she could survive, he knew the water was freezing and would eventually die if there was no help he took the chance to show dignity to Rose.

The Call of the Wild

Jack London's novel The Call of the Wild watching the characters chang throughout the novel is one example I loved reading.

When I hear something about the novel The Call of the Wild this reminds me about the zeal of survival when it comes to mind. As example this novel has a great deal of anthropomorphism.  I believe the whole book covers the zeal to survive, whether it is Buck, Spitz, or John or any others. All in all it reminds me that you have to have the skills to survive. And that is what Buck had after fighting Spitz and showing he could be the top dog if he wanted to after defeating his rival. I believe that in The Call of the Wild it shows the zeal of survival. The weather is very brumal in the novel, and it can actually make you imagine it and feel it within you. Buck also shows celerity through his swiftness and speed that is read throughout the novel. Jack London created this novel character wise to be different. In many ways does Spitz, Buck, and John make me aggravated at some points, and then other times I'm fist pumping in the air. If I were to compare this novel, I would compare it to Eight Below, it is pretty much the same story line sled dogs, survival stories, etc. Also I would compare it to how my step dad went to Alaska, he seen some people like this quite a few times. He brought back some memorabilia about these sled dogs. The scene effects their lifestyle in many ways, a few being, weather, sickness, tiredness, loneliness, etc.

My recommendation is that I would certainly tell others about this novel, also a very relying story that can tell you lots of good survival information skills. This novel has taught me lots by expressing it through my actions while reading such a tremendous novel.

What Does Being Human Mean

When the question what does human mean come to mind I think of three things. One being to show feeling, another would be to be able to think, the final thing being to believe. All of these three things show the true meaning of life I would say. In other words it is saying you need to be able to think about your decisions, to show feeling to others, and to believe in yourself, life, and others. These things to mean describe my life and I can truly say these define my life. Sometimes life can be arduous in many ways. Meaning that it can be difficult at times but you just have to get back up and proceed with greatness. Life can attack you from all different sides at some points in your time, which is said to be beset. Do your best in life and do everything possible to make it even better.

The Effects of Setting

Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing.

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie. The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together. The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

Antonia had to change not only herself but her setting as well, she had to go to the farm lands, she had to learn to farm in order to get food to eat. They did not have very much money, so they kind of depended on Antonia. After she left the farm lands she then moved to Black Hawk. She was changed in many ways, from being a hard working laborer to wearing fancy dresses and becoming a much successful young lady. Jim on the other hand was effected by the setting as well. Their long distant brotherly, sisterly relationship was going down the drain fast.

A setting that has a huge impact but mostly an effect to me is life. Life is like a roller coaster you just have to go with the flow. I think people need to realize that life is a journey not a destination. Many say "come on, enjoy it while you can." Some do not like to listen to their parents, take orders from people, work on a daily basis, or just in general take life for granted. We need to realize what we have, many do not see that. Life to me describes family, friends, loved ones, pets, just the simple things. I love my life and would not change one thing. I hope that life brings everyone joy and happiness and a journey that can be rembered.

Chunk #1: Comment the effect of the setting on the characters within the novel.

Chunk #2: discuss the effect a setting on you, including imagery (lots of adjectives) and a simile or a metaphor as you describe the land.
