The Effects of Setting

Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing.

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie. The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together. The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

Antonia had to change not only herself but her setting as well, she had to go to the farm lands, she had to learn to farm in order to get food to eat. They did not have very much money, so they kind of depended on Antonia. After she left the farm lands she then moved to Black Hawk. She was changed in many ways, from being a hard working laborer to wearing fancy dresses and becoming a much successful young lady. Jim on the other hand was effected by the setting as well. Their long distant brotherly, sisterly relationship was going down the drain fast.

A setting that has a huge impact but mostly an effect to me is life. Life is like a roller coaster you just have to go with the flow. I think people need to realize that life is a journey not a destination. Many say "come on, enjoy it while you can." Some do not like to listen to their parents, take orders from people, work on a daily basis, or just in general take life for granted. We need to realize what we have, many do not see that. Life to me describes family, friends, loved ones, pets, just the simple things. I love my life and would not change one thing. I hope that life brings everyone joy and happiness and a journey that can be rembered.

Chunk #1: Comment the effect of the setting on the characters within the novel.

Chunk #2: discuss the effect a setting on you, including imagery (lots of adjectives) and a simile or a metaphor as you describe the land.

Softball Dreams

My Claim
  • Softball needs to be put back in the Olympics for many reasons.

Reason 1:
  •  Players dreams that will continue to be among them after college. This is devastating, because so many girls dreamed about softball Olympics. "I know that it was a lot of young girls dreams to play softball further than college and into the Olympics. I think we need it to get it back so the young girls can peruse their dreams. We need to get it back for them." says Jennie Finch. The more I play "the more I think about it."
    • Commentary 1: For example Jennie Finch describes in this documentary on how she wants girls dreams to go as far as hers did.
    • Commentary 2: In other words I do not want my dreams to be crushed. I would love to carry out my wishes and hopes of playing Olympic softball.
Reason 2:
  • Vote for this sport back in the Olympics for other young girls dreams. "We need those International Olympic committee members to vote us back where we belong." Softball was taken out of the "2012 Olympic games with a 2005 vote." The ISF started a campaign to show the world softball should be back into these games.
    • Commentary 1: For example, If everyone could get together and reach out to help those reach their dreams.
    • Commentary 2: In other words, I believe that we could make this work. Come all together as a whole and make it work.
Opposing Claim
  • They say many believe that the whole softball calendar would peak and then an over crowded calendar and schedule would happen.
My Rebuttal
  • Just because the calendar would be extremely full, that does not mean they can just take out a sport. We need it back and that is my final belief. I, Myself, can definitely not change the world but, I will try to change this disturbing result of taking a sport out of the Olympics.
My Paragraph

Softball needs to be put back in the Olympics for many reasons. Players dreams that will continue to be among them after college. This is devastating, because so many girls aspired about softball Olympics. "I know that it was a lot of young girls dreams to play softball further than college and into the Olympics. My Thinking
This paragraph is mainly described at Inductive thinking due to the fact that inductive thinking is an argument whose premises make its conclusion likely. My conclusion is considered likely because most everyone will have to vote for this decision. Some will say yes, some will say no.

A dark an stormy nightttttttt...

Me and my friends went out to Lee Chapel to go "ghost hunting." Rediculous huh? Lee Chapel, as everyone knows, people say it is haunted. Way out in the middle of NO WHERE, with a creepy cemetary, and a abandon church, with all of its belongings inside. Me, Storm, and Sarah got this magnificent idea to take a trip. So we set a time to meet up and drive out to this so called "haunted place." We arrive, it is pitch black, we go up to the church and we already hear noises. I do not believe in ghosts so therefore I thought it was just a coinsidence. There is a piano right in the center of the room, I start playing it, the next thing you know you here a HUGE BANG noise coming from upstairs. To get to the upstairs of the church you have to walk outside and go up stairs connected to the building, so we all get the nerve to go up there. Storm, the crazy boy he is brings a Ugui board. My momma told me to never play with one, so I was freaked out. We played around with it, and it moved. We all promised not to lie to each other about this whole board thing. Storm started freaking out saying it moved an such but who knows, it could have been fake?  Well, we all had a very interesting dark an stormy night, with my two best friends.

A Pioneer NEVER Quits....

The motto that everyone goes by, it has always been in this...that is Pioneer Pride. When I think of this I automatically think of Coach Stu Smith, end of story. This man defines Pioneer Pride. Stu Smith has been in this school for the longest time, and when he says this you truly know what he is talking about. We never give up or quit, many people or teams can do this but as a Pioneer you know everyone will back you up and have your back for support. If you need help and your feeling down in your sport, someone will say "A Pioneer Never Quits." It is always helpful in many ways, knowing this. This quote has been going on forever, and I pray it will never change, and stay the same. This quote, saying, whatever you want it to be called has gone through so much with this school. If it ever changes, it will not ever be the same, it is to well known.       As a Pioneer, I know for a fact in Pioneer Nation, Pioneers will never quit.

Why I chose my Mammy as an Audience...

My Mammy is the greatest woman I know, and I think she should know it, even though I tell her all the time. Sweetest and most loving person I know? Yeah, I'm proud to call her my grandmother. When something or somebody is in a bind, without a doubt  she will be there. Sunday lunches that she cooks for everyone, including members from our church, picking up people and doing the best she can do. These are just a few of the many reasons she inspires me. When I get older I hope and pray to be just like my Mammy. I wanted to do my grandma a favor and choose her, because she is the person I look up to most.
Being around my Mammy makes me feel so special, she is an all around grandma that I look forward to be.

A Journey or a Place...

A trip to the tree houses with my sweet and precious Mammy!
Me and my Mammy took a roadtrip a while back to these beautiful tree houses in cord charlotte. Mammy will do just about anything in the world with me, and as soon as I asked her to go to the tree houses she said "yes, ma'am we can go!" Mammy is a very outgoing, loving person with a huge heart. We all love spending time with our grandma. As soon as we got there, we noticed how many tree houses there actually were. All together there was about a total of 8 tree houses, all up in the treetops. The man that built these were very creative. There was slides coming down the houses, ropes, ladders, all sorts of things! On our way home we went, what we now call it ''backroading." Mammy showed me what all she grew up around, through all the houses of her friends, all the land they played on, and all the memories she remembered. I thought it was very cool knowing all the history and family stuff. All the stuff she said came to me knowing that i have such a cool family with lots of history. As all of this above shows, we really went on an adventure and a journey all at the same time!

9.11

The new design on the World Trade Center is pretty dramatic, lots of things are being changed, new things are being added, and even more is being a safer place. There are 104 floors and 71 elevators in the new and improved design for the World Trade Center.

Five are high speed express cars moving at 2,000 feet per minutes, or at the most 23 miles per hour. It also takes 45 seconds to reach the top of the World Trade Center. In an eleveator 23 miles per hour is pretty dang fast. With 104 floors and at a rate of 45 seconds to get there it must be fast and obviously a stomach turner.

If I had to guess or make a prediction on why they are building these fast and many elevators, it would be, because in case another freak accident happens again, they would want to get down as quick as possible. When I think of 9.11 I automatically think of the dust, people screaming, and people trying to figure out how to get down and out of the building. With these new elevators this will help the percentage of people get down in case of a accident. As you can see, this new structure is going to pervent more people from being hurt, and having the risk of being trapped in case something happens.
